Manual physical therapy, often referred to as hands-on therapy, involves skilled techniques by your physical therapist to address a range of issues. This approach includes muscle manipulation, joint manipulation, muscle kneading, and joint mobilization. The ultimate goal is to enhance your range of motion, alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and facilitate efficient healing after an injury or symptom flare. At HELIX Performance Physical Therapy, our expert therapists tailor a manual therapy plan specifically for you and your unique challenges.

Types of Manual Therapy

  • Joint Mobilization: This technique focuses on loosening the joint, leading to the resolution of pain and movement issues.
  • Soft Tissue Mobilization: Techniques such as the Graston Technique are employed to break down adhesions, or fibrous tissue causing pain and restricting movement. Breaking these down offers relief for post-surgical problems, sports injuries, and chronic pain.
  • Strain Counterstrain Technique: Particularly beneficial for back problems and other pain-causing conditions, this technique involves controlled movements to return a restricted joint to its normal range of motion. Strain counterstrain is a powerful and painless method for recovery after an injury or illness.
  • Muscle Energy Techniques: These techniques involve controlled resistance exercises guided by your physical therapist, and help lengthen damaged muscles while establishing new motion barriers for your joints, without causing pain.

Manual therapy emerges as a powerful healing tool for sudden injuries, chronic pain, and post-surgical issues. By understanding the origin and extent of your condition, your therapist can tailor a treatment plan that focuses on improving muscle, bone, and blood supply. Beyond relieving joint and muscle restrictions, manual therapy reduces pain and enhances blood flow, providing immediate and long-term benefits.

Can’t say enough about Wes

I hurt my leg training for a marathon and after working with him a few months, my leg feels GREAT! I just got home from a trip to Europe that I was a little worried about. I felt 100% the 2nd or 3rd day in Paris - maybe it was the 12-13 miles we were walking every day, maybe it was the French bread/wine, maybe it was both. Since i've been back, i've been riding my (indoor) bike too, just trying to get my leg stronger (still going to the gym, still doing my exercises).

THANK YOU for all of your efforts, your knowledge, your patience. I couldn't have done it without your guidance.  And it is 100000% appreciated.

Skilled and very engaging

I found Wes while he was at Diablo PT via Yelp when I needed help with severe sciatic pain. I was able to schedule sessions with Wes and was amazed at his knowledge, skill and very engaging personality.

At no time did I ever feel that I was getting a "cookie cutter" problem. He listens very well and works with you as an individual to provide exactly what you need.

I can't say enough good things about Wes and how much he helped me fully recover and get even better than I was before my injury.

I feel better each time I leave

Wes Anderson is one of the best physical therapist I have ever had. He is professional, bright, explains everything he is doing to strengthen my body, and I feel better each time I leave. He does not just give you a massage. He is breaking down tight muscles and gives me more flexibility and movement.

No matter what your issue is, you will get the best of care

I highly recommend Wes in Danville. Before going to Wes I had gone to several other places. Wes is, hands down, the one of the best. I saw him at his old clinic in Danville Diablo Physical Therapy. No matter what your issue is, you will get the best of care.
