FAQs

Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive evaluation by a medical professional, which may include a physical examination, imaging studies such as MRI, and a discussion of the patient’s medical history and symptoms.
UCL injuries are often caused by the repetitive stress placed on the ligament during overhead throwing motions, common in sports like baseball, softball, and javelin throwing.
While Tommy John surgery is a common treatment, not all UCL injuries require surgery. Conservative treatments may include rest, physical therapy, and rehabilitation exercises. The appropriate treatment depends on the severity of the injury.
  • Recovery times can vary depending on the type of surgery they get, but athletes typically undergo a structured rehabilitation process that may span anywhere from 6-9 months or 9 to 15 months before returning to full competitive play.

Preventive measures include proper warm-up routines, strength training, and conditioning exercises to minimize stress on the UCL. Athletes and coaches should also emphasize proper throwing mechanics.
The success rate is generally high, with many athletes returning to their pre-injury level of performance. However, individual outcomes can vary.
While UCL injuries are prevalent in baseball players, they can occur in athletes participating in various overhead throwing sports, such as javelin throwers, softball players, and tennis players.
UCL injuries can occur both suddenly, due to a specific incident or trauma, and over time as a result of repetitive stress. The gradual onset is often seen in athletes engaging in repetitive throwing motions.

Can’t say enough about Wes

I hurt my leg training for a marathon and after working with him a few months, my leg feels GREAT! I just got home from a trip to Europe that I was a little worried about. I felt 100% the 2nd or 3rd day in Paris - maybe it was the 12-13 miles we were walking every day, maybe it was the French bread/wine, maybe it was both. Since i've been back, i've been riding my (indoor) bike too, just trying to get my leg stronger (still going to the gym, still doing my exercises).

THANK YOU for all of your efforts, your knowledge, your patience. I couldn't have done it without your guidance.  And it is 100000% appreciated.

Skilled and very engaging

I found Wes while he was at Diablo PT via Yelp when I needed help with severe sciatic pain. I was able to schedule sessions with Wes and was amazed at his knowledge, skill and very engaging personality.

At no time did I ever feel that I was getting a "cookie cutter" problem. He listens very well and works with you as an individual to provide exactly what you need.

I can't say enough good things about Wes and how much he helped me fully recover and get even better than I was before my injury.

I feel better each time I leave

Wes Anderson is one of the best physical therapist I have ever had. He is professional, bright, explains everything he is doing to strengthen my body, and I feel better each time I leave. He does not just give you a massage. He is breaking down tight muscles and gives me more flexibility and movement.
